Imaginarios de la Bandera en el Arte Cubano exhibit at the Pabellón Cuba

By Adalys Pérez

The collective exhibit “Fuerza y Sangre. Imaginarios de la Bandera en el Arte Cubano” will be opened next April 11 at Pabellon Cuba as part of the Ministry of Culture strategy related to the use the homeland’s  symbols and recognition of the importance this place has in our architecture.

More than a hundred national artists will participate in this exhibit aimed at reflecting how during the last fifty years Cuban artists have had the national flag as referent to approach our identity through painting, drawing, sculpture, design, graphics, installations and video.

During a conference press Isabel Pérez Pérez, exhibit curator together with Daniel Alfonso, declared the conception of the project hasn’t been done from a historic perspective, although will be certainly present a group of iconic works made by artists who have treated this subject in a recurrent way like Raúl Martínez, Lázaro Saavedra and Carlos Garaicoa.

Likewise and as part of the homage to Pabellón Cuba, the public will be able to appreciate 75 posters, magazine covers and other graphic elements allusive to important dates, events or cultural happenings that have deserved to include the national flag in the design of their images.

As the curator expressed, beyond our flag’s patriotic connotation, its design was of the most revolutionary ones at that time and inspiring for other national flags of the continent.

The coincidence of the exhibit inauguration with the date of Marti disembarkation in Playitas in 1895 just as the selection of the ribbon the Heroe de Dos Ríos had as starting point for the curator work and graphic strategy of the project obey to its unavoidable historic connotation.

Therefore, together with the exhibit there will be also a collateral program of conferences, meeting and guided visits with the purpose to tribute a deeper reflection about the events that have taken place in our country.

Similarly to other exhibits of such importance, once the exhibit is closed at Pabellon Cuba on June 11, a version of Fuerza y Sangre… will tour the rest of the provinces and will be present in Holguín and Santiago de Cuba provinces before the end of 2016.

Although it was an original idea of the National Council of Visual Arts, others have been also involved in this Project like the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, the Center for the Development of Visual Arts, the Fototeca de Cuba, the Hermanos Saiz Association and other Councils and institutions under the Ministry of Culture.
