Miguel Laino. Who am I?

The Yusto/Giner gallery presents ‘Who am I’, the second individual exhibition of Miguel Laino in this space. Originally from Huelva, Miguel has lived in London for over ten years, where he studied at the prestigious Central St Martin’s College. After graduating and dedicating himself professionally to fashion for a few years, he decided toshift his focus towards painting.

When we engage his work as spectators, his creative imagination makes an immediate impression through images which speak of the relationship between the personal and the universal.

There is a definite sense of a response to everyday life, to our familiar human desires and fears. But this response appears free of judgement, freeing the viewer in turn to draw their own conclusions and write their own stories from the suggestions provided by the images.

The painting of Miguel Laino is characterized by a strong expressiveness and a complex and mysterious character which springs from his way of perceiving the world. Through this mise-en-scène, his images behave like pictures of daily life: pure, vibrant and occasionally obscure, revealing visions that straddle reality and memory, nostalgia and
dreams.

He distorts the stability of our point of view, deconstructing, deforming or erasing forms and recreating figures which appear to be on the verge of a kind of dissolution. However, in this dialogue between the stereotypical conventions of portraiture and the apparently imminent dissolution of figures, the characters are always recognizable in an abstraction charged with references, restoring a delicate equilibrium.

His process of representation is debated in that tension between what is real, subjective and emotional, and anattempt to imbue the form of each work with a unique and honest perception, which is nonetheless open to multiple interpretations. Thus our own viewpoint is both respected and challenged at the same time, and we are left with a sense that perhaps art and reality are both creations of a collective consciousness which unites us all while celebrating us as unique expressions of itself.
