National Ballet of Cuba to present Giselle in Puerto Rico

Havana.- The National Ballet of Cuba with its general director, Alicia Alonso, will present Giselle on June 11 and 12 at the Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce in Puerto Rico, according to the company’s press note.

Viengsay Valdés, Anette Delgado, Dani Hernández, Ernesto Díaz, Ginett Moncho and Cynthia González will star this staging accompanied by the soloists and the corps de ballet.

With music from Adolphe Adam and designs of Cuban artist Salvador Fernández, the piece shows the popular Germanic legend gathered by Heinrich Heine with a choreographic adaptation designed by Alonso in 1943.

Giselle has a special place among the rest of the Cuban company’s pieces for being one of the most internationally requested and acclaimed in the traditional repertoire.

The Prima Ballerina Assoluta won in 1966 the Grand Prix de la Ville of Paris, at the 4th International Dance Festival celebrated at the Champs Elysees for her version and personal performance of this classic.

The National Ballet of Cuba has performed seven times in Puerto Rico, where Alicia Alonso, Josefina Méndez, Loipa Araújo, María Elena Llorente, Orlando Salgado, Marta García and Lázaro Carreño have been awarded.

Located in San Juan, the Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce is one of the most important cultural centers and has three rooms mostly destined to ballet, operas, concerts and theatre plays.

After this visit the Cuban company will visit the Dominican Republic where they will perform La Magia de la Danza with scenes from Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Don Quixote, Swan Lake and Symphony of Gottschalk.
