Santiago de Cuba Hosts 36th Caribbean Festival

Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.- The artistic gala that inaugurated on Sunday in this city the 36th edition of the Caribbean Festival, dedicated to the Republic of Ecuador was a tremendous display of cultural syncretism expressed in music and dance expressions.

Orlando Verges, director of the Caribbean Center highlighted the scope of the Festival, which has transcended its founding objectives by favoring the continuity of the processes of formation of the region’s cultural identity.

Verges stressed that the meeting is also dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Cuba, the centenary of the birth of writer Jose Soler Puig and the 25th anniversary of the first participation of the Dominican Republic in the festival.

The meeting will also pay tribute to prominent writer and researcher Joel James Figarola, founding director of the Caribbean Center and the Fire Fiesta, on the tenth anniversary of his death.

Meanwhile, Fabian Solano, Ecuador's ambassador to Cuba, thanked organizers for dedicating this meeting to his country, which in April was hit by one of the biggest earthquakes in its history, and that attends these festivities with a representation of popular and traditional culture groups.
