Thomas Demand. NMNM Collection / UBS Art Collection Project Space Villa Paloma

In 2010, Thomas Demand (b. Munich, 1964) inaugurated the Villa Paloma as guest curator of the exhibition La Carte d’Après Nature. Today, the NMNM is inviting him for a solo show in the Project Space.

Demand conceptualises his works on the basis of a painstaking mise-en-scène, photographing life-size cardboard models of significant or notorious sites stripped of all human presence. Using the surreal properties inherent to photography, Demand invites viewer to question the “tragic” dimension of these scenes which at first glance seem quite ordinary.

Also at Villa Paloma, the film Vostok by Leticia Ramos (b. 1976) will be shown in the Video Room. Ramos drew her inspiration from scientific discoveries made at Russian research stations to create a reconstitution of a supernatural and distant underwater landscape that plunges the viewer between science-fiction and documentary.
