Bill Viola: A Retrospective

Bill Viola: A Retrospective offers a thematic and chronological survey of one of the pioneers of video as an art form.

Organized by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and sponsored by Iberdrola, this ambitious retrospective reaches back to the single-channel videotapes from Viola's early days in video art, through his more recent work produced following the advent of high-definition flat screens.

Developing a conspicuous interest in Eastern and Western mysticism, philosophies and poetry, Viola uses the technical potential of video as a tool for grasping and expressing the essence of the human condition: birth, death, change, rebirth, and transformation—all prominent themes explored in the exhibition.
