De Jonckheere to inaugurate new Monaco gallery with Modern and Old Masters

Founded in 1976, De Jonckheere Gallery is the art world’s point of reference for 16th and 17th centuries Flemish painting. Since 2012, the gallery has also guided its collectors in the works of the great masters of Modern art. In this vein, the gallery opens the doors of its new space in Monaco on Thursday 22 June 2017 on Avenue Princesse Grace. Influential and frequently visited, Monaco as a city takes on an important role today in the international art scene.

The detailed study of the works selected by De Jonckheere, and the energy put in to distinguishing the finest works on the market, have allowed the gallery to establish its reputation and its expertise in the great Flemish masters for the past forty years. Equally, its taste in the paintings by the great masters of Modern art have progressively led the gallery to broaden its activity with the same level of engagement.

Keeping up with the new generation of collectors, De Jonckheere takes a progressive approach which guides beginners in enriching their collections with exceptional works of art.

The inauguration of the new space in Monaco marks this momentum, supported by the arrival of the new generation of the De Jonckheere family. De Jonckheere will propose a cycle of three annual exhibitions which will combine its expertise of Flemish painting and that of Modern art in one space, at the centre of Monaco’s cultural landscape.

THE MEETING OF MASTERS: INAUGURAL EXHIBITION

The inaugural exhibition entitled ‘The Meeting of Masters’ brings together major works by old and Modern masters. The composition of followers and disciples of the painter Hieronymus Bosch, among which include the Brueghel dynasty, Lucas Cranach the Younger, Abel Grimmer, Jan Van Kessel, Herri Met de Bles, Frans Snyders, Peeter Snyers, Isaak Soreau, Adriaen Van Stalbempt, David Teniers, Louis de Caullery, Francesco Guardi and Corneille de Lyon, are in dialogue with the masterpieces of Modern artists such as René Magritte, Alexander Calder, Lucio Fontana, Jean Dubuffet, Nicolas De Staël and Enrico Castellani.

SCENES OF FLEMISH LIFE

From religious scenes to rural settings and traditional celebrations, the diversity of subjects and styles of 16th and 17th century Flemish painting are perfect illustrations of Southern Netherlands at the time. The presented works’ rich details and pictorial vocabulary are revealing of the paintings’ modernity.

MASTERS OF MODERN ART

Facing the great masters of Flemish painting, De Jonckheere is also exhibiting a selection of its most recent and most beautiful Modern art acquisitions, where Lucio Fontana is honored with several examples from his Concetto Spaziale series, and never-before-seen works by one of the great Surrealist artist, René Magritte.
