Josef Albers in Mexico

Along with his wife and fellow artist Anni Albers, Josef Albers (1888-1976) traveled to Mexico and other Latin American countries more than a dozen times from 1935 to 1967, visiting the monuments of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and gathering hundreds of black-and-white photographs of the pyramids, shrines, and sanctuaries at these sites.

Josef Albers in Mexico explores the relationship between Alber's art and the forms and design of pre-Columbian monuments, across a selection of rarely shown early paintings, iconic canvases from the Homage to the Square and Variant/Adobe series, and works on paper.

The exhibition also includes a rich selection of photographs and photocollages, many of which have never before been on view, offering an opportunity to learn about the least known aspect of Alber's practice—photography—while providing new perspective on his most celebrated abstract works.
