M Leuven. The Ten

Periodically, and in order to give visitors the chance to experience for themselves what is involved in setting up a large collection presentation, M involves the public in the process.

Built up as a game, ten members of the public are selected to meet at six different times with the museum’s team, either virtually or in person, and discover from different angles thirty works from the collection of M and Cera. Then, participants earn points to keep their favourite work of art in the collection presentation. Each episode ends with a round of votes and each time, some artworks are dropped. At the end of the experiment, only the ten most favourite works remain.

Based on elements of visual literacy from the cultural theory ‘Cultuur in de Spiegel’, the common thread running through the project is the experience of art. How do visitors look at art? How do visitors analyse works of art? Is this the same for everyone?
