Mirel Fraga: Inner Cosmos

Oaxaca-based artist Mirel Fraga shares her spiritual journey through art in the exhibition Inner Cosmos: a collection of recent works on paper that showcases color harmonies, eclectic symbolisms, organic shapes, abstractionism, and otherworldly visions. A key to these images is the creative process: the very act of painting, which was led by Fraga's own pursuit of harmony, balance, inner calm, and joy.

One of her goals for this exhibition was to emphasize the act of painting as a spiritual activity, and a transformative ritual: "My artworks are manifestations of my inner cosmos, depicting imagination, consciousness, and the Unconscious. They are both quite fantastical and magical, a mixture of real, symbolic, imaginary, oniric, and my inner voice", the artist said.

This exhibition highlights the therapeutic role of art, as seen in artists like Yayoi Kusama, whose work inspired Fraga in her own quest for mental well-being: "I aim, in some way, to work with or to endure my emotions and obsessions, just like Kusama did. In that sense, my work is closely related to my mental health, so I'm always looking for harmony through the repetition of shapes and colors", she mentioned.

Visually, the most predominant characteristic in these paintings is Fraga's signature use of color: eye-catching, symmetrical, and carefully arranged chromatic compositions. For this show, she added more neutral colors to her usual palette, which she combines with vivid ones to create eye-pleasing harmonies. In this respect, she paraphrases Kandinsky when she mentions that color harmony is a principle of an inner necessity.
