Pose and Variations. Sculpture in Paris in the age of Rodin

Around thirty sculptures from the collections of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen will be assembled in this exhibition, the first one to be dedicated to the theme of the pose in nineteenth-century French sculpture.

A selection of works by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741 -1828), Paul Dubois (1829 -1905), Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827 - 1875), Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838-1902), Edgar Degas (1834 -1917), Denys-Pierre Puech (1854 -1942), and Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) will reveal the way in which these artists adopted and adapted certain poses, mainly inspired by the Classical mythology. Five distinct groups of works in the exhibition will show how French sculpture evolved in the 19th century to distance itself from prevailing canons to follow more personal paths.

Pose and Variations will also illustrate the common passions of two great twentieth-century art collectors: Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914) and Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (1869-1955).
