First South Biennial in Panama 2013

Within the framework of the celebrations for the Fifth Centennial of the Discovery of the South Sea, the first South Biennial in Panama 2013 has kicked off under a slogan that reads “Calling Worlds”, featuring an international-scope project aimed at encouraging cultural development and promoting new trends in the visual and fine arts in the Central American region. One of the main objectives of this new event is the recognition, spreading and encouragement of artistic creation, as well as the promotion of new trends in visual and fine arts within the cultural and urban environment of Central America. The Biennial has set out to transform the cityscape and its scenes in a way in which the community plays a major role. In this opening edition, the Biennial has gathered over 300 artists from every nook and cranny of the planet, including institutions and the public. A curatorial committee was in charge of handpicking the artists and issuing the invitations to boldface names of the fine arts. The selected artists mull over the ties among four top topics –Violence, Economics, Water and Wind. From April 15 thru May 30, the Biennial will deploy a vast and varied repertoire of artists and ambiences that will get a hold on all possible and imaginable scenarios.
