The Botí Foundation approaches to migrations in ARCO

Migrations are the theme chosen this year by the Rafael Botí Foundation of Córdoba, for its stand at ARCOmadrid 2019, the international contemporary art fair that will be held at IFEMA until March 3rd.

The exhibition was inaugurated yesterday by Marisa Ruz, president of the Foundation and delegate of Cultura de la Diputación de Córdoba; its curator, Isidro López-Aparicio and the participating Cordoban artists: Rafael Baena, Beatriz Sánchez, Gervasio Sánchez and Pepa Anguiano Millán.

Migrations

According to its organizers, "Migrations" invites reflection, action and hope on a phenomenon that does not stop growing, which brings with it the loss of millions of human lives each year. It is also a historical phenomenon that the artists have supported: the common thread is the 80th anniversary of the Spanish Republican exile, the largest in the history of Spain, a country that has been a migrant, although some prefer to forget it.

Many of the works have been made specifically for ARCO. Fernando Baena, for example, brings a painting exhibition, while the visual artist Beatriz Sánchez has created a model assembled with figures that have different symbolic areas.

Migrations

The photographer and journalist Gervasio Sánchez contributes two works linked to situations that occur in wars. On one hand, a photograph taken in the year 1999, on the border between Albania and Kosovo, in which two girls appear peering through a blanket in a truck. The other snapshot reflects the exodus caused by armed conflicts (they could be Syrians, Afghans or Iraqis); In the midst of disaster, a girl smiles ...

The one of Pepa Anguiano is a piece in the form of visual glossary, with 38 images and different terms that are repeated in the current migration, all deployed as an accordion, imitating the controversial concertinas that can be seen, for example, in the borders of Ceuta and Melilla with Morocco.

In this context, the new "Dictionary of Women Artists and Architects of Córdoba", made by Óscar Fernández, Jacinta Ortiz and Carmen Cerezo, will be presented. And there will also be conversations about art and migration, with Elvira Dyangeni.

Migrations

This is the third time that the Foundation participates in the Madrid fair, giving "value and projection to the Cordoba artistic culture", while taking advantage of the great showcase that is ARCO for the diffusion of the artists and the institution itself, which works actively with contemporary art, which they understand as something "accessible, that intervenes in the present, and whose promotion transcends the limits of languages and borders".

The Provincial Arts Foundation Rafael Botí is a local autonomous body, dependent on the Delegation of Culture of the Diputación de Córdoba. With dynamic vocation seeks to generate movement from the contemporary languages of art.
