Japan at the Havana Biennial

The project of socially inclusive art Turn of Japanese artists was inaugurated in the 13th Biennial of Havana that takes place in the city until May 12 next. At the inauguration attended the Hon. Mr. Kazuhiro Fujimura Ambassador of Japan in Havana.

According to Katsuhiko Hibino, supervisor of Turn is a project that takes advantage of the characteristics of art, trying to find the value that there is in the individuality, characteristics and differentiation of people. It is a program that creates opportunities for meeting and exchange, saving their differences in physical capacity, generation, gender, nationality and residence.

Traditional Cuban and Japanese techniques and methods were used for making them. The artists went to wellness centers such as the residence of San Ignacio and Lamparilla, the Convent of Belén and to the local communities such as the Ángela Landa school, located in the Plaza Vieja.

The exhibition is the maximum expression of the results of the exchange process and workshops held in these centers. Among the works exhibited with Cuban techniques highlight the hats of yarey and kites, while for the Nipponese are the Shimenawa and the Koinobori. The artists Loán Carratalá Carrales and Ruth Mariet Trueba participated in Cuba; and for Japan: Kazuya Matsuhashi, Moeko Tokumoto and Naoko Nakamura.

Turn is sponsored by the Tokyo Prefecture, the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, Art's Embrace, a non-profit organization, and the Tokyo University of Fine Arts.
