The year’s last two months are always pretty active for the art market since major fairs and tradeshows are held, gathering collectors, gallery owners, curators and art critics, let alone top-notch auctions in all major host cities.
New York became the heart and soul of this climax on Tuesday, Nov. 2, when Sotheby’s put a number of high-quality impressionistic artworks under the gavel. And this was just the beginning of several days dedicated to modern and contemporary art in which pieces by world-class masters of the visual arts will be auctioned off. On Thursday, Nov. 4, the same auction house will put over eighty pieces from Europe’s 19th-century art under the gavel, while Nov. 9 will gather collectors once again to bid for a number of abstract expressionistic works that are supposed to rake in up to 21.6 million euros.
For its part, Christie’s is coming up this week with an auction of works by such greats as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti and Georges Seurat, for the upcoming three days that follow, there’ll be an auction of two other great Pop Art creators: Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Warhol’s Big Campbell Soup Can with Can Opener (Vegetable) (1962), valued somewhere between 21.6 million and 36 million euros, will be put on sale on Nov. 10, while Ahhh Alright, a painting by Lichtenstein from 1964 is estimated at 28.8 million euros.
Also at Christie’s, an auction especially devoted to Latin American art will unfold on Nov. 19 and 20. The biggest attraction to bid for will be the piece entitled Moon Serenade by Rufino Tamayo, estimated at $1.5 million. In the same breath, works by Mexico’s Leonora Carrington, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Juan O´Gorman and Francisco Toledo, Colombia’s Fernando Botero, Cuba’s Wifredo Lam and René Portocarrero, Chile’s Roberto Matta and Nicaragua’s Armando Morales will also be auctioned off.
