Encounters: 12 ambitious large-scale installations by artists from across Asia and beyond

Encounters will bring together artists from different backgrounds and generations from around the globe, thoughtfully situated along the four meridians that run through the two exhibition halls of the show. Nine of the works shown will be premiering in Hong Kong SAR, China, including: a new textile-based sculptural intervention by nonagenarian Romanian artist Marion Baruch that questions the clothing industry’s production processes and use of natural resources; 'Everywhere West, Everything East' (2020) by Manila-based artist Patricia Perez Eustaquio, one of the leading Filipino artists of her generation, addressing issues around the Age of Exploration and its repercussions on modern consumerism; South Korean artist Lim Oksang’s site-specific large-scale sculpture of a human head with a carved out space within that serves as a shelter for the audiences; acclaimed Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi's completely new installation of unstretched canvas panels covered in red acrylic paint based on traditional miniature painting techniques; and the latest installation by Pakistani artist Adeela Suleman, who creates richly layered sculptures using the filigree tradition of Islamic art.

Further highlights include a performance by Berlin and New York-based artist Asad Raza, an installation by Hong Kong-based artist Andrew Luk, a series of sculptures made of charcoal logs by South Korean artist Lee Bae, and work by Australia-born Chinese New Zealander artist Yuk King Tan, among others.

Alexie Glass-Kantor, the sector’s curator, commented: ‘The context in which we live shapes the way we approach the present moment. Our cultural context, experiences, and histories are constantly shifting to create new forms of vernacular knowledge. 'While We Are Here' will reflect on the impact we have on the world around us and what impact the world we live in has on ourselves.’
