COVID-19: Universal Pictures and its simultaneous premieres

The epidemic of COVID-19 that plagues the world has also impacted the film industry. To the suspension of filming that have suffered great productions such as Jurassic World: Dominon, the sequels of 'Avatar', the third installment of 'Fantastic Animals', the adaptation of the video game 'Uncharted' or the new film of 'Matrix' are joined by new distribution alternatives.

This being the case, Universal Pictures announces that it will make its films available to households on the day of its release in theaters worldwide. The first experience will be with the film Trolls World Tour, whose premiere is scheduled for April 10 in the United States.

Universal will also make movies already on theaters like The Hunt, The Invisible Man and Emma available to viewers.

As NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said in a statement: “The company felt that now was the right time to offer this option both at home and in theaters. NBCUniversal will continue to assess the environment as conditions evolve and determine the best distribution strategy in each market when the current unique situation changes.”

“Instead of delaying these films or launching them in a challenging distribution landscape, we wanted to offer an option for people to watch these titles at home that is both accessible and affordable. We hope and believe that people will continue to go to the movies in theaters where it is available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is less and less possible.”

The truth is that once this sad period is over, many will be the losses as many will be the new options for creating and distributing art.
