GR gallery. Chen Wei Ting - Jason Pulgarin

GR Gallery is pleased to announce "Main Event" and "I Saw You Before", two concurrent solo exhibitions featuring artists Jason Pulgarin and Chen Wei Ting. The shows will reveal, for the first time in a public exhibition, the latest series of artworks that the artists has been working on for the past months. Appositely conceived for this occasion, these new body of works will independently invade the gallery space, contrasting and counterbalancing each other. The show will put together twenty original pieces including paintings, sculptures, drawings and one print.

In "Main Event " Jason Pulgarin will adapt his recently developed digital brushstrokes inspired style to depict a fresh series dedicated to the golden years of 'WresltleMania'. Using the American Wrestling as a metaphor of  nowadays life and the distortions of the contemporary art market, the artist will bring to the gallery, as a unique and cutting edge revelation, Hulk Hogan, Andre' the Giant, Macho Man and all the most iconic wrestlers with all the wrath, flashiness and drama that used to identify them. Jason Pulgarin is known for his brightly colored and highly stylized figurative works on paper, but is also deeply rooted in the graffiti and mural subculture.  Drawing inspiration from cartoons, fashion, graffiti, and street culture, Pulgarin's work demonstrates the ever more porous boundaries between the traditional art world and these other disciplines and influences.

On the other side in "I Saw You Before" Chen Wei Ting will set his imagination free from any temporal reference, populating the exhibition space with his visionary characters. Inspired by a mixture of traditional Asian mythology, popular culture and contemporary chronicles, these uncommon beasts combine at the same time extra cute components with the current hype and a singular timeless, nevertheless nostalgic, aura, that will shoot the visitor in a newfangled fairytale like territory. "I think memory is so important for me that I always draw in my note and then make it be painting or sculptures. It's all about intuition. Besides, I also made my paintings in different way. I think it is new try for me." Using his nostalgic tastes, the beasts create an enticing allure that is captured with subtle cute faces mixed with recognizable creatures that we can all still relate to today. With each creature creating an emotional rollercoaster is a reason why Chen has been so successful contributing to our emotional and ageless child self.

Jason Pulgarin, (Brooklyn, 1990) is known for his brightly colored and highly stylized figurative works on paper, but is also deeply rooted in the graffiti and mural subculture.  Drawing inspiration from cartoons, fashion, graffiti, and street culture, Pulgarin's work demonstrates the ever more porous boundaries between the traditional art world and these other disciplines and influences. Pulgarin's current work focuses on an intricate series of water-color paintings designed to evoke a curious combination of melancholy, erotica, and the juxtaposition of strong feminist empowerment battling a troubled and fragile masculine ego.

Wei Ting Chen (Taiwan in 1991). His childhood was full of cartoon, and strongly influenced his practice. In Fu Jen University, he majored in Chinese Literature and started writing poems as another way of making a drawing. His work is mostly figurative with dreamy and fantasy references executed mostly with acrylic paints and colored crayons, often accompanied by poems that correspond to the visual parts and provide a complete sense of a story. He restlessly keeps investigating the expression of his work often highlighting the differences between child and adult. In a search for more opportunities to explore with different artists and starting new projects, he currently studies in the Global Art Practice program at Tokyo University of the Arts. He lives and works in Tokyo.
