Art Basel reveals further details for September show

Art Basel’s 2021 Basel edition will take place from September 20 to 26, 2021. Appetite for real-life events, combined with accelerating vaccination programs and the progressing loosening of travel restrictions have all contributed to the decision to hold Art Basel’s first in-person fair in Europe since 2019. Furthermore, the Swiss government’s recent announcement on medical and capacity regulations for large-scale conventions gave Art Basel’s management the clarity necessary to deliver this year’s show.

Art Basel in Basel comes in the wake of Art Basel Hong Kong 2021. Featuring over 100 galleries and welcoming over 30,000 visitors despite extreme travel restrictions, the Asian edition heralded the return of Art Basel’s physical shows. It also marked the beginning of Art Basel’s new offering with the launch of Art Basel Live, an enhanced Online Viewing Rooms, a digital VIP program, and daily social media broadcasts – innovations that will be carried forward in Basel.

The 2021 edition will have an additional VIP Day and extra space available in the halls. Galleries will have new ways of participating, including by staging joint presentations, presenting satellite booths manned by Art Basel staff, and curating small exhibitions – or Wunderkammer – within another gallery’s stand.

The Basel show will also feature mainstays of the Swiss edition, including Unlimited, which is dedicated to artworks transcending the classical art fair booth, and Parcours, which gathers artworks disseminated throughout the city of Basel.

Participating galleries will be announced early July.
