On Wednesday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m., the Centro Cultural Taíno Casa del Cordón will host a talk titled “The Mystical Universe of the Taíno Society”, which will explore the beliefs, symbols, and mythology of the ancient Taíno people from historical, artistic, and anthropological perspectives.
The event will feature researcher Abelardo Jiménez Lambertus, a specialist in the mythology of the Insular Arawak (or Taíno) peoples, and visual artist Geo Ripley, whose work engages both art and anthropological inquiry. The conversation will be moderated by cultural advisor José Enrique Delmonte.
The activity will take place at the Casa del Cordón, located at the corner of Isabel La Católica and Emiliano Tejera streets in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. This iconic 16th-century building, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, currently serves as the headquarters of the Centro Cultural Taíno Casa del Cordón, an initiative sponsored by Banco Popular Dominicano.
The center offers visitors the chance to experience the permanent exhibition “Nuestros primeros pobladores” (“Our First Inhabitants”), which includes a remarkable collection of pre-Hispanic archaeological artifacts on loan from the Fundación García Arévalo. In addition to this exhibition, the cultural program includes interactive shows, educational experiences, and public events aimed at fostering greater awareness of Taíno heritage.
This upcoming conversation is part of that program and seeks to promote reflection on the ways in which the mythic worldview of Taíno ancestors continues to resonate in the cultural memory of the Caribbean today.
