New times for the “Ballet Nacional de Cuba” (National Ballet of Cuba: BNC) begin with the appointment of Viengtsay Valdés as Artistic Assistant Director of the company. She, one of its most brilliant first dancers, will share this responsibility with the everlasting General Director, prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso.
Her main characteristic is to devote herself with passion, rigor and discipline to the art of ballet. Upon facing this challenge, which began on January 22, the first dancer, whose name of Laotian origin means Victoria, has shown in these first months how much firmly and authoritatively she will take over the helm of this prestigious “ship” to follow a safe course .
In mid-March, already in charge, Valdés went on stage to star in Cinderella, by renowned Cuban choreographer Pedro Consuegra, and music by Austrian Johann Strauss Jr. The new assistant director of the company took the opportunity to demonstrate some of her future artistic and aesthetic objectives.
