Brazilian representation at the 59. Biennale di Venezia

Popular expressions that use parts of the human body such as "wooden face", "eye of the hurricane" or "from the guts to the heart" serve as inspiration for the exhibition With the heart coming out of the mouth, by Brazilian artist Jonathas de Andrade (1982, Maceió, AL), this year for the Brazilian Pavilion.

"I realised that there are literally hundreds of popular expressions with body parts to describe feelings and situations. They involve literality and absurdity to account for subjectivity, which for the moment in Brazil is very revealing", said the artist for the The Art Newspaper.

Curated by Cecilia Alemani, the 59. International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2022 takes its title from the book The Milk of Dreams, by surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917, United Kingdom – 2011).
