2011 ZONAMACO Prizes

Mexico City: The prize “Acquisition of Latin American Photography Purificación García" (promoted in the recently-concluded Zonamaco eighth edition) went to artists Alex Dorfsmann (Mexico, 1977) and Gonzalo Lebrija (Mexico, 1972).

The Perrier Art Contest winning works belong to Rodrigo Noriega (Sculpture); Dulce Pinzon (Digital Photography); Natassja Diaz and Hugo Correa (Digital Art).

Likewise, Centario Tequila, for the fifth year in a row, granted a prize to the best emerging artist of the fair, this time around to the hands of Karmelo Bermejo, of the Maisterravalbuena Gallery, while the Raven Foundation bought a piece made by the winner.

And, finally, the Chilango Arte Publico prize was granted to David Hernandez for the best work that intervened in a public space of the city of Mexico.

News media report that some 35,000 people were present at the fair for the five-day exhibition at the Centro Banamex, including collectors, artists and public in general of the country and of other parts of the world, that came to know and buy the works of thousands of artists represented by more than 110 galleries from 20 different nations.

Zélika Garcia, general manager of Zona MACO commented, “I am very pleased with the results of this eighth edition, I have talked with several gallery owners and they are very satisfied with the sales and the relations that they have generated for future purchases. Besides that, it is a great satisfaction to know that every year the number of people interested in the contemporary art in the country is on the rise.” A good case in point is the information offered to one of the galleries of Zona Maco Sur, the Ruth Benzacar Gallery, which sold all works by Argentine artist Jazmine Lopez showed in the exhibit.

This year, inside Zona MACO, books by artists Gonzalo Lebrija, Regina Silveira and Raul Cordero were presented. In addition, activities parallel to the fair, like guided visits to museums and exhibitions in other galleries, were conducted. That experience helped enrich days full of contemporary art in Mexico City.
