The Museo del Barrio, the Queens Museum of Art and the Harlem Studio Museum are cooking up an ambitious project for the first half of 2012. The project is called Caribbean: Crossroads of the World.
The project will take a closer look at the visual arts and their esthetic development all across the Caribbean Basin, relying on the history of the English-, Spanish-, French- and Dutch-speaking islands and their own diasporas.
An international bevy of academic advisors and artists is sketching out a far-reaching and innovative exhibit coupled with scholastic discussions, all-out programming of public functions and educational events, and the publication of a thick catalog. The project is laid out in thematic sections, starting with the Haitian Revolution to date.
Up to now the symposiums in New York, Trinidad, Martinique and Guadeloupe have been confirmed, as well as a number of side events on the islands of Curacao and Aruba.
The development of this initiative has been backed up by the Reed Foundation and the Rockefeller Bros. Fund. The list of attending artists includes Cuba’s Alexandre Arrechea.
