Painting the Patagonia

A resulting exhibition from the 2010-2011 Third International Contest on Teraike Realist Painting, was inaugurated on June 14 at the Parque Forestal Contemporary Art Museum of Chile University, which called Chilean and Argentine artists to shed light on the Patagonia.

The contest is organized by Teraike S.A. and this edition was successful, as over 350 works were received, 24 of which were awarded (these works are exhibited at the Contemporary Art Museum).

The call set the Patagonia (Chilean or Argentine) as leit motiv, though it was clear that creators were entitled to unleash their creativeness in the recreation of scenes or landscapes from their geographical, literary or anthropological realities. The untamable elements of nature and unstable weather were key aspects in realistic representations, though they kept the renewal sense of art in the 21st century, as they contained a non-traditional but inquiring and offering reflection regarding to the current representation of this part of the world.

Alejandro Peralta Barroilhet got the first prize with Hielos del Sur; the second position was given to Argentine artist Enriqueta Beretta Susani; and Paulina Pinto Lara received the third award. As for Honorary Mentions, they were received by Alejandro Ciliberti Fuhrmann from Argentina, Alejandra Andrea Basualdo Mesa and Adrian Raul Gouet Hiriart, both from Santiago. Besides, Chile’s Air Force offered a trip to the Antarctic for the three winners and honorary mentions, who will create their on-the-spot painting during their stay at Presidente Frei base.

It’s important to highlight the contribution represented by this contest in terms of art decentralization, because it’s Punta Arenas city, and not capital cities, where the bi-national event is created, exhibited and promoted.

Gabriel Barros Ossa was the curator for the third edition of this event. The display can be visited through July 3rd, which will be later showcased in Concepcion (Conception University Art Gallery), Iquique (Collahuasi Hall) and Buenos Aires, Argentina (Recoleta Cultural Center).
