Cuban Art & Decorative Arts to Go Under the Gavel

A press conference to announce the details of the upcoming Subasta Habana edition –an event slated for Nov. 2-3 in the Cuban capital- was held yesterday, Oct. 26.

 

Starting today, 110 lots of Cuban Art and Decorative Arts can be admired at the gallery and Sancti Spíritus Hall, Cuba’s Hotel Nacional, respectively, 9:00 a.m-6:00 p.m.This tenth edition stands out because of the amount of lots and total of values.

 

The pieces of Decorative Arts represent several styles, ages and expressions. There are -among crystals, bronzes, ceramics and furniture- two outstanding chryselephantine pieces created during the 1920s: a small gilt-ivory figure of a woman with a pigeon, signed by GeorgeOmerth, and another figure that represents a silver-brass-and-ivory Pierrot signed by Roland Paris, one of the most acclaimed exponents of Art Deco-styled chryselephantine. Likewise, artworks created by G. Morin and Vallenthin will be shown to collectors.

 

In terms of Cuban art, the selection is divided into 3 lots of the academy, 38 of modern art and 19 of contemporary art created by 44 artists. First time in SubastaHabanaDomingo Ravenet, Jaime Valls (with an artwork from 1920 entitledRumberoranked among the most sought after), CarlosAlfonzo, Glenda Leon, Osvaldo Yero and Manuel Lopez Oliva.Special presence of five artworks by LolóSoldevilla and four byServando Cabrera Moreno with different styles, formats and ages. Also included RenéPortocarrero with three lots and Amelia Pelaez with two, Domingo Ravenet, VictorManuel, Mariano Rodriguez, Jose Maria Mijares, Raul Martinez and Jose Bedia.

 

The most expected bidding is going to be carried out with the presentation of Guitarrista(1945), by Mario Carreño, an impressive painting to be competing with Brujo (1945) by Rene Portocarrero, an abstraction created by RaulMartinez (S/T, 1963), an landscape by Tomas Sanchez (Meditacion en la cascadadel rio azul, 1996) and one of Roberto Fabelo’s recent works (Gran huevo, 2011).
