National Fine Arts Award for Ever Fonseca

Acclaimed Cuban creator Ever Fonseca (Manzanillo, 1938) was recently given the 2012 National Fine Arts Award in Havana. “In recognition of the fantasizing ability reflected on his works over half a century”: this could be read on the document signed by a jury chaired Ernesto Fernandez, who won the laurel in 2011.

Twenty six Cuban institutions put fourteen proposals on the table, including representations of painting, engraving, sculpture and photography. He had already been nominated for this award, and now Ever was handpicked due to the quality of his work, the Cuban spirit and authenticity it reflects, and the role played by his career on the history of Cuban art as part of a very important generation, the first one to get its degree at the National Art School.

During an interview carried out by Aracelys Bedevia for Juventud Rebelde newspaper, the artist said to be privileged “and, at the same time, committed since I’ve learned that what I’ve done is positive, and I can have a structural base to affirm: this is my response to what fate held in store for me.”

We will keep you posted on the repercussions of this Award, the official awarding ceremony and the artist’s upcoming exhibition to take place at the National Museum of Fine Arts. In this respect, he commented: “(…) in that event, I want to launch the book I’m presently writing with my opinions on the nature and history of my painting. Likewise, I’m planning to put my CD on the map”, since, beyond his fine arts career, he is currently recording a phonogram. Ever Fonseca was the first one out of his generation, in the 1960s, to exhibit at the National Museum of Fine Arts.
