“Soundings: A contemporary Score” First MoMA’s Grand Exhibition on Sound Art

'Soundings: A contemporary score' is the first exhibition held by New York’s Museum of Modern Art on sound art and will be gathering artworks created by 16 contemporary artists that work with sound, August 10 – November 3.

These artists deal with sonorous art from several disciplines, ranging from visual arts, architecture, performance or computer programs, as they are interested in working with other material realities and natural environments.

These artistic responses range from architectural interventions, visualization of sounds that otherwise would be inaudible, an exploration on how sound can bounce within a gallery or a series of field recordings: abandoned buildings in Chernobyl, 59 bells in New York City or a sugar refinery in Taiwan.

The diversity of these works reflects that sonorous art is a complex field, with tons of nuances. However, the show proposes a specific concept: the way we hear determines what we hear. In fact, the works provoke and evoke an intense relationship between inner space and outer creator.

We’re living times in which persona audio devices and customized play lists have become omnipresent, while shared sonorous spaces are hard to find. Many artists bring this situation to an end with the exhibition –the sound they create is markedly social– by immersing visitors in the space and connecting them.
