Adrián Pellegrini, The World in Shapes and Colors

By: Gilberto González

Prestigious artist Adrián Pellegrini del Riego has inaugurated a new exhibition at the Provincial Center of Fine Arts and Design, located in the intersection of Luz and Oficios, in Old Havana’s Historic Core.

The show, titled Cinco Elementos (Five Elements), is made up of 21 pictorial pieces painted in oil, worked with natural pigments based on metals, in the old style, two ceramic sculptures and is inspired by music. His medium-and-big-format works, representatives of abstract expressionism, are mainly characterized by dream-like anthropomorphic figures and animals that emerge in front of viewers, as well as natural and harmonic structures featuring soft lines and curves, which sometimes become angles. Pellegrini del Riego, a basically self-taught artist, has also written several books on narrative, poetry, research and art critic, and his illustrations are printed on them. One of his titles, “The Pyramids and the Solar System”, initially published by the British Council of Antiquities when he was just a teenager, sheds light on the relation between the geographic position of the pyramids of Guiza and the layout of the Solar System’s bodies. He was born in Havana in 1979 and created his first drawings, watercolors and gouaches in different formats between 1983 and 1987.
