Curitiba Biennale Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Curitiba International Biennale reaches its 20th anniversary in 2013. Scheduled to be held at Parana’s capital city on August 31st and December 1st, it will be showcasing artworks created by 150 artists form the five continents in over 100 spaces of the city.

The exhibitions are curated by art critics Teixeira Coelho (MASP – São Paulo’s Museum of Art) and Ticio Escobar (Triennial of Chile), who this year suggest a revision of biennial’s format. That’s the reason why they put aside the traditional choice of a topic or title, and focus on handpicking works that can represent a significant aesthetic experience. In fact, the artists and their artworks were selected by taking into account such criteria as quality and contemporaneity, instead of adaptations for a specific topic.

In this edition, Curitiba International Biennale pays special attention to urban art and artistic performance, which have a stronger presence in the international stage, offering a direct and immediate contact with the people of the city. Literature, web art and music have their space in the event.

In order to extend and foster the effects of the Biennale, the organizers are going to develop a project of educative action, with activities to train professor and students, conferences and round tables opened to the public, distribution of educational material for free and visit programs for school groups, as well as guided visits to the exhibition spaces.

The general curators are joined by curator Adriana Almada, associated curator Tereza de Arruda and guest curators Maria Amelia Bulhões, Fernando Ribeiro, Ricardo Corona and Tom Lisboa. Stephanie Dahn Batista was in charge of the curatorial coordination. She will be responsible for a group of young curators – made up of Angelo Luz, Debora Santiago, Kamilla Nunes and Renan Araujo.
