Cuba’s Museum of Fine Arts Organizes Valuable Exhibitions for October

Cuba’s National Museum of Fine Arts announces an important group of actions to take place at the Building of Cuban Art in October, including the top-class show Mario Carreño, donde empieza la luz and the anthological display by master Ever Fonseca, Evocacion Lirica, which made him be granted the 2012 National Award of Fine Arts.

Likewise, the 1^st Biennial of Communitarian Workshops: Museum and Community is going to be held on October 17 - 19, and will be focused on the museum-community relation by grouping different workshops and cultural projects of the country, as well as representatives of institutions from Costa Rica and Venezuela. The organizers have already received 25 presentations and the other participation modes are poster, multimedia and documentary.

During a press conference carried out at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Roberto Cobas, curator of the show dedicated to commemorate the centennial of Carreño (May 24) to be inaugurated in October 4, explained that this artist is one of the most outstanding painters of Cuban historic avant-gardism, “a magnificent figure of painting in Latin America in the 20^th century”, also described as one of the most remarkable artists of Chile, where he lived since 1957 to his passing away in 1999, when he was 86 years old.

The display is made up of 30 pieces, including oil paintings and drawings, created by the artist between 1937 and 1957, the most productive stage of his career also known as his Cuban years, also covering his work in the United Stated in 1940.

On the other hand, Elsa Vega spoke about Ever Fonseca’s Evocacion Lirica, curated by Hortensia Montero, which, starting on October 11, will be showcasing 18 paintings that belong to NMFA’s collections and other institutions, such as Jose Marti National Library and the Naval Hospital; the exhibited pieces carpet the period from 1960 to date and the works have not been shown before.

Vega highlighted the contribution made by Fonseca to the culture of the nation, due to the authenticity of his work, its intrinsic relation with national wildlife and the myths and legends of Cuban countryside that have bathed his lyrical expression with mythological and genuine character.
