ARTS LIBRIS Turns Arts Santa Mònica into Geography of Art Books

ARTS LIBRIS, Barcelona’s international show on contemporary publishing, turns Arts Santa Mònica into a geography of art books: 100 book publishers on artists, photography and design are included in this unique, integrator, creative and innovative collage, with international repercussion.

The book is a creation territory where ARTS LIBRIS stands, although contemporary editions of artist books lie beyond the margins established by the format. They expand and cover the infinite territory of art and creation.

For each edition – and this will be the fifth one – ARTS LIBRIS invites new artistic disciplines to join the project. Design and photography have been present in previous editions. MÚSIC will be the special guest this year because the books can be read and touched, but also listened.

Three music-themed exhibitions: Plàstics extraordinaris, curated by Lluis Marrasé, is a selection of CD-books on art, which come from private collections of Miquel Jurado and Fermí Puig. Veure música is articulated as a tour from the 1960 decade to date, guided by three Catalonian photographers: Francesc Fàbregas, Xavier Mercadé and Juan Miguel Morales. Finally, photographer Miguel Trillo’s installation makes viewers play the leading role in the concerts.

18 concerts and screenings scheduled by Picap, Enderrock, Rockdelux and Taller de Músics, as well as round tables, a dialogue between Santiago Roncagliolo and Santiago Auserón, and the recital by last one to close this edition.

ARTS LIBRIS is the 21st century. Innovating and betting on the excellence within contemporary art is one of the slogans of this project. That’s why it’s important to highlight the presence of one of the most outstanding international specialists on artist books, Moritz Küng. He is the coordinator of international symposium Making and Collecting Artists' Books that is going to be attended by Victoria Browne, editor with Kaleid Editions, Christophe Daviet-Thery, Elizabeth James, curator of artist books and librarian at the Collections Area, National Art Library (Victoria and Albert Museum), Guy Schraenen, curator and advisor of book collections, artist Ignasi Aballí and designer and editor Alex Gifreu.

ARTS LIBRIS is set to be held on April 23 – 27, 2014 at Arts Santa Mónica center in Barcelona, within the framework of Sant Jordi day: the book festival and, in this case, books as art and experimentation pieces.
