Inaugurated Festival Ellas Crean (Women Create) in Havana

The documentary Mujeres... La hora dorada (Women ... The golden time) by the director Ingrid Leon Vila opened the activities of the Festival Ellas Crean (Women Create), which opened on Saturday at the Museum of Fine Arts in Havana.

With all its full capabilities and even moviegoers that missed seats and still remained there, the Cinema 23 and 12 played the audiovisual that denounces violence, intolerance and gender inequality experienced by females.

In 33 minutes, the testimonies of 12 women are offered: a teenage mother; a famous actress; one athlete; one-winning poet; an ex attorney who served prison but pleads she is not guilty; a woman with dwarfism; an invalid woman as a result of physical abuse; a mother with two disabled children; an ex alcoholic and former drug addict who attempted suicide; a mother whose daughter, sick with AIDS, died; a graduated woman from journalism converted to Islam; a transsexual, and finally Havana, made woman, the stage where all inhabit.

Verses of Havana with photographs of the city, the view backward from their puddles, call the attention to that other place that exists and where women suffer.

This is the first solo documentary by Ingrid Leon. Her previous material as director was together with the also director Lissette Vila, director of the Project Palomas, the Audiovisual Production House for Social Activism and that now presents Mujeres... La hora dorada (Women... The golden hour).

During the projection, Leon Vila dedicated the documentary "to the Alfonsinas of the universe and Havana which is also a woman." The idea is "to promote the decision to report pain suffered by the women and to which they survive with dignity."

The Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry, the Gender Equity Program with National Incidence (PEGIN) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation also participated in the production.

The festival Ellas crean (Women create), sponsored, among others, by the Embassy of Spain in Cuba and with the support of Ministry of Culture, will meet from October 11th  to October 18th  with its most important theme: the artistic work done by women.
