Havana. - Our attendance to the 35th Caribbean Festival—from July 3 to 9 in Santiago de Cuba—will be just the beginning of a much closer cultural relationship, assured in this capital Daniel Johnson, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture from Bahamas.

It is a privilege for us to be the first Honorary Guest country to this festival and a bigger one to be able to participate in the festivities for Santiago de Cuba´s 500th anniversary, Johnson said during the presentation of the event, dedicated to promote the Caribbean region popular cultures.

The Bahamian Minister, who arrived to Havana with a working team, confirmed that around 170 delegates from his nation will travel to the Eastern city, where they will show some aspects of their traditions, dance, gastronomy and music, among them.

Art is healing, is blessing, to collaborate, to protect and to promote the collective culture will join us, he insisted.

Bahamas, only 12 miles from the national territory, shares with Cuba identity and history, another reason to highlight those bonds and to strengthen relations with the help of a Festival that has been the scenario for strengthening the links among the peoples of the region, stated Orlando Vergés, director of Casa del Caribe.

The institution, that organizes these meetings since 1981, will be once again the link among the 14 nations that have already confirmed their attendance to the 35th festival, in which 921 artists and intellectuals have already decided to participate.

Verges emphasized this year will be special as we will be celebrating the five centuries anniversary of the foundation of the Village of Santiago de Cuba, and our event will be the beginning of the most important festivities for this anniversary.

Some of the Festival´s proposals will include theoretical meetings, workshops, popular parades, galas and homage. This year´s event will coincide with the celebration of the 35th anniversary of Estudios Siboney of the Musical Recording and Edition Company, which has also contributed to the rescue of the traditions carrier groups of the so called Great Caribbean.
