In Zona Franca: Viaje al Paraíso, from Agustín Bejarano

By: María Carla Gárciga

The most recent sample of relevant artist Agustín Bejarano, Viaje al Paraíso, part of the mega project Zona Franca exhibited at San Carlos de La Cabaña, can be considered as utopic and dreamer. Nine big format canvases from a 16 pieces bigger series are for the first time exhibited in the context of the 12th Havana Biennial with recurrent elements in the work of the artist.

“I propose another visualization of paradise from a reflective vision based on the contemporary man existential problematic. I try to unify different series I have made both in painting and engraving, to make the continuity and breaking relations in my creation more dynamic”, explained Bejarano in the presentation of his project.

For critic David Mateo, this painting series constitutes an interest of appraisal and relocation inventory, more than an experimentation and search exercise as the previously seen in his works.

“The exhibit represents that great illusion to imagine what Paradise could be for me; it’s a recreation of a supposed Paradise which is essentially those longings we always have in our minds. I think it’s said in the most poetic form I could find”, declared Bejarano.

This is another proposal for the public at the Morro Cabaña, where aesthetics, forms, concepts and generations converge in the greatest Cuban contemporary art sample.
