Heritage, an Added Value of Cuban Resort Varadero

An area of some 400 hectares of Varadero, Cuba´s main seaside resort, will be declared Urban Area with Historical and Cultural Value by the National Monuments Commission. Mayra Hernandez, director of the Office of Monuments of the western province of Matanzas, told the Prensa Latina news agency that the declaration aims to maintain and preserve the historical, cultural, architectural and environmental value of the well known resort.

Hernandez said that Varadero has 88 buildings with heritage value, 47 out of them are included in category 1, 26 ones in the category 2 and 15 buildings in category 3, mainly by the vernacular architecture (wood) and stonework.

Hernandez said that the declaration ceremony will take place at the Conference Center Plaza America, during the 4th National Workshop Museology and Society, scheduled for September 22 to 24 in Matanzas.

Varadero is among the top 10 sun-and-beach destinations in the world and in 2014 was visited for the seventh consecutive year by more than one million foreign tourists.
