Sports as center of British Cultural Week in Havana

The 4th British Cultural Week in Havana will offer different proposals starting with a Rugby match between the Indios del Caribe and Habana del Este teams next October 4 at the Ciudad Deportiva, celebrating the Rugby World Cup that takes place in that European country. 

 

In press conference celebrated at the Castillo de La Real Fuerza Museum, with the presence of His Excellency Mr. Tim Cole, ambassador of Great Britain to Cuba, was informed about the wide program organized for this cultural event.

 

On October 6 will be inaugurated an arts show at the Castillo de La Real Fuerza Museum for the 800 anniversary of the Magna Carta, occasion to learn more about the most important constitutional document of all the times, subscribed by John,King of England and the politicians at that time for a new distribution of power and that was antecedent of the modern political systems and the arts show Candela, from British artist Justine Foord, that gathers suggestive images that establish a metaphoric relation between the United Kingdom and Cuba, at the Fototeca de Cuba.

 

A sample of British films dedicated to sports will be opened at the Multicine Infanta movie theatre on October 7, with the screening that day of Postales de Sócrates, about events during the 1968 World Cup when Northern Ireland played against Brazil in the finals; the next day the public will be able to enjoy the film De entre lascenizas, a story inspired in coach Taj Malik Aleemand his team, which became the least expected sports heroes during a campaign that ended with the ranking  for the 2011 cricket World Cup.

 

On Friday 9th, the seventh art lovers will have the possibility to watch the film Graduación del 92, that narrates the rise of six talented young football players from the Manchester United team between 1992 and 1999, and also Sueños por un caballo, real and emotional story of a group of Welsh friends of humble origin, who decide to get into the elite sport “of the kings” and to train themselves a racehorse.

 

From October 9 to 11,Teatro El Público Company will present the play Freddy at the Trianon theatre. This a piece created by famous writer Abilio Estévez, theatre homage to the life of Freddy Mercury, leader of the British rock band Queen. That night at the Fábrica de Arte Cubano will be presented Moda y Música, Intercreatividad, dedicated to British Tim Berners-Lee.

 

Films screenings continue at the Multicine Infanta movie theatre on Saturday 10th with El gol de la victoria, that narrates the chronicles of Samoa’s football team, known as the weakest of the world and their efforts to classify for the 2014 World Cup and Chicas veloces, in which two women that become professional sprinters join the British relay race team in an international event.
