Galerie Triple V collaboration at Art Cologne's 50th edition, opening 13 April

Triple V gallery and Galerie Samy Abraham will come together for Art Cologne’s 50th edition, taking place from April 14th – 17th 2016. The booth will feature American artists Lisa Beck and John Tremblay, both part of Brooklyn’s long-standing contemporary art scene.

The artists, who have exhibited together before in 2001 with their installation Natural Wonders at Galerie Francesca Pia, Bern, share similar artistic approaches. For Art Cologne 2016, they will present existing works, alongside an unseen collaborative project. Their art is an impure abstraction that alludes to Pop culture.

Their off-centre, abstract art is displayed in a variety of forms, playing with the concept of the painting, its form and presentation showing canvases hanging, self-standing, shaped on the frame all transcending the line between painting and sculpture, drawing on influences such as the Op Art movement of the 1960s.

Both artists use strong, bright colours in their works, drawing on science fiction and comic book art, alluding to the idea of the futuristic. The repetitive patterns seen in everyday life are used in their works, causing the viewers’ visual perspective to become confused

Often credited as giving a new life to abstraction and Op art in contemporary painting, John Tremblay was born in 1966 and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

A much talked about artist, John Tremblay’s work is respected on the international art market and has been recently exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo and the Kunsthalle of Bern. Vincent Pécoil founder of Triple V knows the artist’s work well as he dedicated a monograph to him, published in 2005.

John Tremblay has been included in three of Triple V’s group shows, the inauguration of the gallery’s newest Paris space, as well as the group shows Science Fiction #3 et Too Big To Fail (2013). His work was exhibited as a solo show at the gallery in 2012 and will be shown again in April 2016.

Known internationally, John Tremblay’s work has been the object of several exhibitions in Japan (Emon Gallery, Tokyo in 2006), Seoul (Paik Hae Young Gallery in 2007), New York (Paula Cooper Gallery in 2003, 2005 and 2008) and also in Los Angeles (Richard Telles Fine Art in 2000).

Born in 1958, Lisa Beck is an American artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is driven by observable aspects of reality and universal concepts that are too vast or tiny to grasp, which become a kind of abstraction. Her works have an otherworldly quality to them yet also draw on the minimalist movement.

She has been an artist represent by Galerie Samy Abraham since 2013 where she has taken part in numerous group shows including Choices Paris and Unexpected Pieces as well as a solo show in 2014. Lisa Beck will present her second solo show at Galerie Samy Abraham in September 2016.

Lisa Beck’s work has been exhibited all over the world for example The Painter of Modern Life exhibition at the Anton Kern Gallery, New York, which was curated by Bob Nickas as well as in Paris, Lyon, Vienna and Switzerland.

Galerie Triple V was founded in 2007 in Dijon by Vincent Pécoil, Virginie Guillerot and Olivier Vadrot.

Triple V refers to the founders’ initials and is a nod to the surrealist New York magazine VVV published during the Second World War.

First created as a production entity and publishing house, Triple V quickly and logically developed a gallery activity, representing artists such as Jens Haaning, Gianni Motti,

Blair Thurman and Pierre Vadi in the first three years (2007-2010).

24 RUE LOUISE WEISS & TRIPLE V − PROJECTS

During the summer of 2010, the gallery moved to 24 rue Louise Weiss, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. An old industrial area, it welcomes places dedicated to new practices of contemporary art (such as Air de Paris, l’espace Ygrec…). A rapidly changing area, the dynamic location has established itself, especially with the upcoming opening of Halle Freyssinet, a renovated industrial centre that will house 1,000 digital start-up companies.

Since 2010, 34 exhibitions have been shown in this space, the majority of them being monographic. There have been some exceptions however, such as Science-fiction #3 (2012), the reconstruction of the eponymous show organised by Peter Halley in the 1980s or even Catalogue of the Exhibition (2011), a photographic exhibition by Bob Nickas, or more recently a group show by Servane Mary, John Miller, Olivier Mosset and Virginia Overton (2015).

With the opening of its new space on rue du Mail, the gallery on rue Louise Weiss will become Triple V – Projects and will dedicate itself to the continuation of nurturing emerging talents and the support of young contemporary creation led by Vincent Pécoil. He will be supported by critic and curator, Ana Mendoza Aldana.

ABOUT GALERIE SAMY ABRAHAM

Gallery Samy Abraham opened in 2011 at 43, rue Ramponeau in the neighborhood of Belle-ville. It supports French artists (Bruno Botella, Nicolas Milhé) and international ones (Emilie Ding, Genêt Mayor, Shila Khatami).

The gallery focuses on a conceptual and experimental approach which sometimes includes grotesque shapes and a quick-witted sense of humour.

In 2013 the gallery was proud to begin its collaboration with the American artist Lisa Beck, who since the eighties has been working on the problems of exhibiting paintings in relation to space. Through his "Invisible Painting," the density of the unseen is explored by the Swiss painter Bruno Jakob, whose first show in France took place at the gallery in 2014. Last year, the gallery welcomed Mimosa Echard and Jean-Marie Perdrix. They both had their first solo exhibitions at the gallery in early 2016. Mimosa Echard is provoking the bodily and the sen-sual potential of natural and artificial objects. The sculptures of Jean-Marie Perdrix are to be considered as results of a rough alchemy, free from obligations, towards modesty.
