Havana.- One of the reasons I'm here is because the Smithsonian Institute of the United States –the world’s largest group of museums - is interested in cooperating with Cuba, David Skorton, secretary of the U.S. institute visiting the island told reporters.
The researcher, part of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities of the United States -in this capital since Monday- said that they have met with national artists and expressed he was very impressed by Cuban traditions.
With 19 museums scattered throughout his country and nine research centers, the Smithsonian Institute hosts a variety of themes in its facilities, specialized in natural art, science, culture and history.
On their purposes of cooperation and exchanges with Cuba, Skorton explained that each year they organize in Washington D.C. a meeting called Folklife Festival, where they intertwine different cultures and break the barriers of geography, bringing people closer either physically or online.
We want to work with our colleagues here to take Cuba as a guest country to the Folklife Festival next year, confirmed the representative of this chain of research institutes and art, sponsored by the U.S. government.
We are eager to make this happen and now we work together with colleagues from the island so artists and people who represent the most genuine Cuban art arrive there, he added.
He also pointed out that although they are now focused on art and that this is the objective of his delegation in Havana, they do not rule out the idea of ??promoting exchanges so that in the future young Cuban and U.S. citizens can study together, focused on science, culture and history.
I think that, working together with the Cuban Ministry of Culture, we can manage to be great lasting relationships that can be built, he concluded.
On Wednesday, the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities of the United States toured the National Fine Arts Museum and the headquarters of the Litz Alfonso dance company.
