Bolero de Ravel at the Fábrica de Arte Cubano

By Alain Valdés Sierra

Bolero de Ravel, the emblematic work of French composer Maurice Ravel, will be presented from April 24 to May 1st at the Fábrica de Arte Cubano, with the artistic direction of Spanish Miguel Rubio.

Each show, scheduled for 9:00 pm at the building number 3 of this cultural center, will count with the performances of young Cuban dancers from the Cuban Arts University and the companies Acosta Danza, Retazos and Danzabierta.

The approximately 17-minute staging represents the Spanish Arabian essence in which the piece is inspired, a true version of the original, commented Miguel Rubio to the press.

It is an exciting play from the point of view of the interpretation, Rubio said, the intention is to update a classic through the innovation using the staging language in all its extension and integrating contemporary languages.

We didn’t want it to be just another play, he added, but we tried to update a classic to our days.

Rubio qualified the experience to work with the new generations of Cuban dancers, one of the purposes of the staging, as a very good one.

The musical part will be in charge of the Orchestra of the University of Arts together to the Lyceum Mozartiano, which made up by 70 relevant musicians, will be directed by maestro José Antonio Méndez.

Bolero de Ravel was premiered at the Opera Garnier of Paris in 1928, and although the author considered the piece as a simple orchestration study that in its concert version has turned into one of the most played musical works in the whole world.
