‘Bosch: The Close Circle’. Biennale des Antiquaires

For its participation in the 28th edition of the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris, De Jonckheere presents ‘Bosch: The Close Circle’. This exhibition is an ensemble of unseen works realised by the followers and emulators of the painter Jheronymus Bosch.

As a figure beyond classification in art history, Jheronymus Bosch created iconic and fantastical paintings.

On the 500th anniversary of his death (1450 – ‘s-Hertogenbosch – 1516), the artist has finally been honored in 2016. From his birthplace in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands to the Prado in Madrid, his influence will now be celebrated on the stand of the De Jonckheere gallery at the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris.

The Close Circle

The close circle of Bosch is celebrated in a presentation of previously unseen works attributed to his followers and copiers such as Jan Mandijn or Pieter Huys. Compositions entirely reworked, partially revisited or completely invented, these works adhere to the pure fantasy of Bosch and perfectly illustrate his universe.

We know his paintings had considerable importance in the 16th century, but the rediscovery of his work by André Breton and the Surrealists saw him become an ‘integral visionary’. His style was ahead of its time and has rendered him timeless as it continues to feed the fascination surrounding the substantial mystery of his art and studio.

Recognizable in the blink of an eye thanks to a pictorial vocabulary that is as audacious as it is inspiring, the paintings of Bosch have opened a path to many artists. Both known and anonymous, these artists will be the subjects of a specific presentation during the 2016 edition of the Biennale. Previously unseen, these works clearly show the influence of Bosch’s art. Iconic, these subjects have continued to evoke passion from art lovers throughout time.

About De Jonckheere

Founded in 1976 in Brussels, De Jonckheere is a gallery that specializes in the study and sale of Flemish works from the 15th to the 17th century. In 1983, the gallery opened in Paris. Its different collections are presented to the most demanding of art lovers.

Notably, these have included their attendance at prominent antique art fairs such as the Biennale des Antiquaires of Paris since 1978 as well as TEFAF Maastricht and New York.

The De Jonckheere gallery opened a new space in the heart of a historic neighborhood in Geneva at 7 rue de l’hôtel de ville in April 2011. From this point, the location has been at the center of the gallery’s activity. The scenography of the gallery’s booth at the 2012 edition of the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris, which was at the same time antique and modern, marked out the two facets of the gallery’s competency.
