Opera Tosca Staged in Havana

Havana.- The opera Tosca by Italian singer Giacomo Puccini will be staged today at the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso (GTHAA), which will host three performances during the weekend.

This staging will take place in the García Lorca room of the legendary Havana institution on October 27, 28 and 29; with the participation of first figures of the National Lyric Theater of Cuba and singers of the Ukrainian opera.

The GTHAA Symphonic Orchestra will accompany the cast in charge of allowing the participants to enjoy the functions with a contemporary air, without losing the essence of the work, which had its first premiere in 1900 at the Constanzi Theater in Rome.

The sopranos Alioska Jiménez and Milagros de los Ángeles will play the character of Floria Tosca, while the Ukrainian baritones Andrei Maslakov - director of the staging - and Yuri Batukov will assume the role of Barón Scarpia.

According to Maslakov, this drama recreates modern elements in accordance with the public of these times, but without violating the original scores.

The rest of the company is composed of tenors Yuri Hernández and Andrés Sánchez, who perform the character of Mario Cavaradossi; Cesare Angelotti will be played by Yuri Batukov.

Marcos Lima and Jorge Early will also share stage; and in the role of the Sacristan, Vazgen Gazarian of Ukraine, as well as Abdel Roig and Ulysses Karl.

With an argument that combines love, intrigue, politics, violence, passion, and death, Tosca is based on a piece by the French playwright Victorien Sardou, exhibited in Paris, in 1887.
