Arte por Excelencias: a glance at contemporary art

The Review exhibit opened yesterday afternoon at the Origenes Gallery in Havana. The project was the event of choice for the presentation of Arte por Excelencias magazine’s 10th issue as part of the celebrations to mark the launch of the 100th issue of Caribbean Tourist Excellences magazine. A number of artists, like Manuel Mendive, Jose Villa, Reynerio Tamayo, Eduardo Abela, Rene Peña, Cirenaica Moreira, Ruslan Torres and R10, attended the ceremony at the Havana Grand Theater.

Review will remain open through Aug. 10 and features artworks by Jose Bedia, Roberto Diago, Rigoberto Mena, Luis E. Camejo, Arturo Montoto, Carlos Quintana, Kadir Lopez, Moises Finale, Angel Alfaro, Rene Francisco Rodriguez and Felipe Dulzaides.

The keynote speech was delivered by Excelencias Group President and CEO Jose Carlos de Santiago, who thanked both creators and artistic institutions for their support to this project. Mr. de Santiago also handed out the Excelencias Award to Maria Victoria Duran, head curator of the Genesis Art Galleries. From the very beginning, this company has been a staunch ally and supporter in the promotion and evolution of the Arte por Excelencias magazine’s printed and digital versions.

The gathering also provided a perfect backdrop for the launch of the magazine’s 10th issue, with remarks by curator and art critic Dannys Montes de Oca Moreda, who referred to the undisputed quality of this magazine from both a publishing and visual standpoint.

Genesis Art Galleries joined the celebration two hours later with the opening at the La Acacia Gallery of an embracing exhibit of abstract art stretching from avant-gardism to the contemporary art. The exposition engulfs works from 38 Cuban artists, such as Guido Llinas, Raul Martinez, Hugo Consuegra, Julio Girona, Lolo Soldevilla, Tomas Oliva, Gilberto Frometa, Vincench, Humberto Castro and Rigoberto Mena.

This is no doubt just another opportunity to bear out the Excelencias Group’s interest in the support of top-quality cultural projects, especially those linked to the contemporary arts in Hispanic America and the Caribbean.
