Third Latin American artist at the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern

Mexican conceptual artist Abraham Cruzvillegas (city of Mexico, 1968) will present, from October 13, a project at the Turbinas room of the Tate Modern in London, with which he will become -after Spanish Juan Muñoz (Madrid, 1952 - Ibiza, 2001) and Colombian Doris Salcedo (Bogotá, 1958), the third Latin American artist to create a specific project for this space.

Cruzvillegas will be also the first artist whose work will be curated to take part in this place under the program Hyundai Commission, the new sponsor of the event, thanks to which the Tate retakes up this program at the Turbinas room, which had been cut off in the last few years. Since its inception in 2000, other outstanding artists such as Muñoz and Salcedo, Louise Bourgeois, Miroslaw Balka, Ai Weiwei, Carsten Höller, Bruce Nauman, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Olafur Eliasson, among others, have been part of such program.

Cruzvillegas, an artist represented by the Kurimanzutto Gallery from Mexico City, earned his fame and recognition over the past decade for his 'Autoconstructions', sculptures and installations in which he uses found materials which reflect, in a peculiar manner, how the generation of his parents used to build their homes in Mexico, from all kinds of waste or recycled materials. In fact, the artist will bring to London a new version of his conceptual platform ' Autoconstrucción ', curated by Mark Godfrey. The public have the opportunity to see it currently and simultaneously at the Jumex Museum of the Mexico City and the Amparo Museum in Puebla (Mexico), sculptures and installations, as well as records of his recent experiments with images in motion and live events. "Abraham Cruzvillegas: Autoconstrucción " is the first major exhibition dealing with vision and multidisciplinary practice of the artist, and people could see it before at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, being the largest exhibition of his career in the United States.

This Mexican artist who has been included in the list drawn up by ARTEINFORMADO as one of the "fifteen Latin American artists with more force in 2014", is one of the main figures of a new generation related to conceptual artists in Mexico, who have been creating since the 1990s.

Since then, Cruzvillegas has shown his work individually in US centers such as the New Museum and the Dia Art Foundation (both in New York), CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts (San Francisco) and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (Houston); at Europan centers such as the Centre for Contemporary Arts, CCA, (Glasgow), Le Grand Café, Centre d ' art contemporain (Saint-Nazaire, France), or DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (Berlin); andcertainly, in centers and museums in his country, as the MACO Museum of contemporary art of Oaxaca, MARCO Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, or the MUCA, UNAM Museum University of Sciences and Art, in the city of Mexico, among others.

His works can be found in the collections of the most prestigious centers of the world such as the Tate Modern or the MoMA, in New York, for example.

Undoubtedly, the Mexican artist lives an eventful time in his career. He has announced that after attending the 8th Biennial of Liverpool, he will take part in the upcoming 12th biennial of Havana and 12th Biennale of Sharjah.

On the other hand, among the recent awards he was given including the prestigious Yanghyun Prize 2012, given by Yanghyun Foundation of South Korea. This award gives him the opportunity to organize an exhibition in a Museum of world renowned and chosen by himself within three years after having received it. For the information appearing in his other representatives galleries like Chantal Crousel (Paris) and Thomas Dane (London), it seems that the next year it will be at the Kunsthaus Zurich.

Parallel to his work reacted to the Visual Arts, especially sculpture, Abraham Cruzvillegas writes essays, stories and criticism as a way of 'say in public' on the art, politics and society in his country. Regards to his latter facet and on occasion of his exhibition "Abraham Cruzvillegas Autoconstrucción:" will offer a lecture on education and art at the Jumex Museum on January 31.
