Vitoria-Gasteiz: Pradera constructivista y deconstructivista, vista desde el sofá de la casa con los pies sobre la mesa, is the second exhibition inaugurated this year in Spain by artist Wilfredo Prieto (Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, 1978), this time at ARTIUM (Basque Museum Center of Contemporary Art).
Amarrado a la pata de la mesawas his first exhibition this year, which can be admired through April 24 at Dos de Mayo Art Center (CA2M), Mostoles, Madrid, accompanied by a program of meetings and workshops given by the artist.
Commissioned by Blanca de la Torre, Pradera constructivista y deconstructivista… will be showcased through May 29 in the North hall of the Basque institution, as part of the Praxis program where the guest artist sheds light on his work.
Prieto’s work pays tribute to the action and conditions stated in the title upon creating, with building materials (paving stones, scaffoldings, cement mixers, fences, and cement sacks), a recurrent urban landscape with constant environment transformations, physically used as expression of concepts containing irony, humor and absurd, just as it is customary in his work.
The observation point is also recreated so spectators feel themselves familiar with the scene, by inserting a sofa and a fridge where beers can be taken while practicing the “act of contemplation”.
ARTIUM’s promotional note claims that the project is in harmony with the spirit of Praxis, understood as experimental laboratory or workshop where improvisation, recycle, procedural and direct action are combined.
In Pradera constructivista y deconstructivista…, the audience can witness the developing steps of the exhibition, until it’s done; observe and interact with the artist as he works.
Prieto was born in Zaza del Medio, Sancti Spiritus. He was a member of Galeria DUPP project (From a Pedagogical Pragmatic), created by Cuban artist Rene Francisco. He has obtained Kadist Art Foundation residence from Paris and John Simon Guggenheim in New York, among others, and, in 2008, he received F award from Buenos Aires and Cartier Foundation’s from London. He has attended the Venice Biennial (2007) and São Paulo (2010). Art critics have paid attention at his international individual exhibitions Montaña, at SMAK from Gantes, Belgium, 2008; Ángulo muerto, Kadist Art Foundation, Paris, 2006; Mudo, at McMaster Museum of Art from Hamilton, Canada; Mucho ruido y pocas nueces II, at MUSAC from Leon.
