An exhibit entitled Drawing, Representation and Discourse in Private Collections of Contemporary Art in Barcelona could be visited through May 27 at COAC (Spanish acronym for Catalonian Official School of Architects).
The exposition, commissioned by Monica Alvarez Coreaga, is framed within the SWAB OFF activity program at the fourth International Contemporary Art Fair (SWAB) scheduled for May 26-29 at the Fira de Barcelona Fairgrounds (Pavilion 2), organized by Diezy7, an artistic project conducted by architect Joaquin Diez Cascon.
Drawing, Representation and Discourse…is a recognition to the action of collectors, whose remarkable contribution to this contemporary art exhibit is quite visible and in which drawing stands out among the other contemporary plastic arts in terms of both strategies and meanings.
Thanks to the collaboration of collectors from Barcelona, the exhibit features unknown artworks by 22 international artists like Santiago Cirugeda, Nedko Solakov, Jack Strange, Teresa Moro, Rafael G Bianchi, Jonathan Monk, Bernardi Roig, Nasevo, Silvia BÄschli and Regina de Miguel, among others.
The SWAB Fair counts on the institutional support of the Catalonian Generalitat and the Barcelona City Hall, and is sponsored by MANGO, Fundación Banco Sabadell, Absolut Vodka, Nike and Volkswagen. The general program includes galleries that had attended previous editions and other, from both Spain and the rest of the world, that have joined this market. The 50-plus list includes ADN, from Barcelona; Alarcón Criado, from Seville; Arte Boccanera, from Trento; Pedro Cera and Pedro Serrano, from Lisbon; Camden and Fred Ltd, from London; Juan Silió, from Santander; Leuenroth, from Frankfort, and Maisterralbuena, from Madrid.
Hoping to watch some 20,000 visitors walk past the turnstiles –the total exhibition space was doubled from 3,000 to 6,000 square meters- this platform unfolds new programs like My First Art Fair (MYFAF), whereby four galleries with less than two years in the business could expose their works absolutely free. Art Projects will gather pieces from seven young galleries, featuring the works of emerging artists, while Swab Kids, a collaboration of New York-based artist Amanda Browder, will boast a cloth installation in which children could play with a work of art. There’ll be performances staged by artists Hanno Milesi, Jan Vormann and Boris Hoppek, and a Street Art project in the Raval neighborhood.
Swab took place for the first time in 2007 when it gathered 42 galleries and 6,000 visitors. Those figures jumped to 38 galleries and 8,000 visitors in 2008. No event was held in 2009, but in 2010 as many as 13,000 people visited the works exposed by 32 galleries.
