Espacio de las Artes: Collecting Accessible to the Public

Espacio de las Artes at El Corte Ingles puts together, in El Garage exhibition, a significant selection of engraving and photography created by different generations and styles, such as Joan Miro, Antoni Clave, Joan Hernandez Pijuan, Antoni Tàpies, Joseph Guinovart, Lucio Muñoz, Jose Maria Sicilia, Eva Lootz, Roberto Matta, Oswaldo Guayasamin and Rafael Alberti, among others, in an atmosphere that reproduces essential elements of a New Yorker garage. The exhibition kicked off on October 2 and it’s going to be open for viewers through November, Madrid (Castellana 85).

This is the first time that Espacio de las Artes dedicates a whole exhibition to the world of engraving and photography. The informal and confortable tone created in that space promotes the access of casual and interested viewers, who are going to witness the coexistence of retro gas pumps, industrial lamps with certain vintage air and authentic Harley-Davidson bikes, and genuine masterpieces created by acclaimed artists. Visual arts and industrial design shake hands one again to offer a different experience, with trends from every corner of Earth; although restructuring an industrial space, so it becomes cultural center, is a practice that has had an effect on cities such as London or New York; in this case the process is the other way around.

A high point in the exhibition is represented by the selection of engravings created by Larry Rivers, an artist who was born in Bronx, works as jazz saxophonist in the city of skyscrapers, is an honorable representative of the School of New York and is considered the godfather of pop art.As novel element, Espacio de las Artes at El Corte Ingles presents the first photogravures of Alberto Garcia-Alix, a multifaceted artist that, with an outstanding career as photographer, has explored new expression ways that include video, literature, and graphic work.

With this initiative, Espacio de las Artes moves forward in an effort to take art to the streets and position collecting accessible to the public. To do so, it also counts on the benefit offered by El Corte Ingles of funding the acquisition of an artwork up to 12 months.
