Cuban city of Gibara to welcome its Film Festival

HAVANA, Cuba- From the 15th to the 21st of April the tranquility of Gibara will  disappear when its many streets and beaches will be covered by tourists with cameras dangling from their necks, hats and caps, probably because in that town of Holguín the wind never ceases.

It is that in those days will be celebrated the XXVIII contest of the Poor Film Festival  of Gibara, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry and other organizations.

From this edition on, the event will be named Gibara International Film Festival, dropping the ¨poor¨ and with Spain as the guest country.

Regarding this change Mayte Madruga, head of the press office of the event, commented that it will seek from this moment to establish a wider and plural dialogue among all possible film areas in the world.

It will continue to function as an alternative, but in a platform in which all types of participation can converge, without neglecting the ever discriminatory labels of independent cinema and industry, margin and center, third and first worlds.

For the first time at the Festival, Lucía will be the name of the prizes that will be awarded for the works and specialties contestants and, with the purpose of fomenting the most needed cinema, will be awarded the Humberto Solás prize to the cinema under construction.

Madruga stated that a creative program, full of scenic, plastic and musical initiatives of high popular appeal, will also be developed, which does not conflict with the quality of each proposal.

Likewise, the festival office confirms the participation of actor Benicio del Toro, the singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés and samples of the culture of Cuba and Spain.
