Venezuela calls the Romulo Gallegos International Novel Prize

The Ministry of Culture of Venezuela called all the Spanish-speaking writers to participate in the 19th edition of the Prize Rómulo Gallegos International Novel, valued at one hundred thousand dollars.

This contest calls the authors from any residence country to submit previously unpublished works in Spanish, written in the 2013-2014 two year period, adds this official announcement by the Latin American Studies Center Rómulo Gallegos Foundation (Celarg, after its initials).

The award ceremony of the competition, which this time accepts digital books (e-book) with ISBN registration, as something new, holding will be a public ceremony at the headquarters of the Celarg, on August 2, 2015 when birth of Gallegos is celebrated.

The admission period closes on March 15, 2015 and can not be extended, while the prize will be given by majority vote, it may not be divided or declared not awarded, it will not confer a second prize nor honorable mentions, neither will be given to an author already awarded through this competition.

This Prize, which was created to perpetuate and honor the work of the eminent Venezuelan novelist Rómulo Gallegos (1884-1969 Caracas), as well as to stimulate the creative activity of Spanish-speaking writers, it was established in 1964.

The 1st Edition was carried out on August 2, 1967 and in the 18th edition, held in 2013, President Nicolas Maduro personally gave the award to Puerto Rican writer Eduardo Lalo, a prize winner for his book Simone.

Rómulo Gallegos is considered the most important Venezuelan novelist of the 20th century, one of the greatest Latin American writers of all times. Some of his works such as Doña Barbara are among the Latin American classics of all time. Rómulo Gallegos was elected President of Venezuela in 1948, and was President only for 9 months, since he was overthrown by a coup d’état.
