Cuba Registration of Havana Charter Acts in UNESCO Program

Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, historian of Havana received the certificate that accredits the official registration of the documentary series Actas del Ayuntamiento de La Habana Colonial Period 1550-1898, in the National Registry of the Memory of the World Program of UNESCO.

In a press conference held at the Palace of the General Captains, Leal said that the minutes are a valuable treasure of the city, an example of what has happened to Havana and what has happened in it for almost four centuries.
They are original, unique documents and the oldest of Cuban origin that protects the Historical Archive of the Office of the Historian of the city.

The Historical Archive treasures the Acts for 80 years, thanks to the work of the historian Emilio Roig Leuchsenring who rescued them and promoted their conservation.

In total there are 273 books (211 originals, 1550-1898 and 62 transcripts, 1550-1809). In themselves, they are genuine material for paleographic, linguistic, calligraphic, linguistic studies and for research on the quality of paper, inks and bindings.

Cuba has been incorporated into the Memory of the World Program since 1992 with various documentary collections such as the archives of the Apostle José Martí and Ernesto che Guevara or the ICAIC Latin American News collection. The Memory of the World Program is developed in order to preserve the most genuine that man has created throughout history anywhere.

The documentary series was also approved by the Regional Committee, now it only remains to wait for the decision of the International Committee.
